Equatorial Guinea Jails Senior Official Baltasar Engonga After Scandalous Fall from Power

Equatorial Guinea’s political establishment has been rocked as Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a once-influential government insider, was sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzlement, closing a dramatic chapter that mixed corruption, sex scandals, and viral internet mockery.

The Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga, married and formerly head of the national financial investigation agency guilty of siphoning off large sums of public money, disguising them as travel expenses for official missions.

Supreme Court press director Hilario Mitogo confirmed the verdict, which also carried a hefty fine of $220,000.

Known by his nickname “Bello,” Engonga was tried alongside five other high-ranking officials, all accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich nation.

But it wasn’t just corruption allegations that brought his downfall into the spotlight — it was humiliation on a global stage.

In November, while awaiting trial, explicit sex tapes featuring Engonga with officials’ wives, some recorded inside his own Finance Ministry office erupted on social media.

The leaks sparked an avalanche of online ridicule, with parodies, mocking songs, satirical dances, and even memes about a spoof virility drug dubbed “Balthazariem.”

Now, with his sentencing, Engonga’s fall from grace is complete — transforming a once-feared power broker into the central figure of one of Equatorial Guinea’s most sensational scandals in recent memory.
