Enugu Government unveils bold projects in drive for transformation

The Enugu State Government has reiterated its commitment to delivering transformative projects that will significantly impact the lives of its citizens before the end of its tenure.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Pro Chidiebere Onyia, stated this while leading State House Correspondents on a comprehensive tour of ongoing and completed projects across the state. The tour was part of a retreat held in Enugu and offered journalists an up-close view of sweeping developments across key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, transportation, and digital governance.

According to Onyia, 90 urban roads have already been fully rehabilitated, with construction work ongoing on an additional 141 roads. These include 10 inter-local government roads and a 40-kilometre dual carriageway designed to ease transportation across the state.

A major highlight of the tour was the inspection of newly constructed ultra-modern bus terminals and a fleet of 200 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses, supported by dedicated refueling stations. Onyia described the initiative as part of the state’s commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly transport system.

The correspondents also visited the expansive site of the New Enugu City Smart-City project, a 10,000-hectare futuristic development featuring monorail transit, central sewage systems, dedicated power supply, and high-speed internet infrastructure.

In the area of human capital development, the SSG revealed that over N134.5 billion—more than 33 percent of the 2024 state budget—has been allocated to education and healthcare. He noted that 30 out of the planned 260 Smart Green Schools have been completed, each outfitted with Artificial Intelligence hubs, science laboratories, and digital learning tools.

On healthcare, Professor Onyia announced the construction of 60 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres and the commissioning of a modern triage unit at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, supported by N21.7 billion in funding.

Water supply has also seen a dramatic boost, with daily output rising from 2 million litres to 120 million litres, courtesy of upgrades to the 9th Mile and Oji River Water Schemes.

The SSG further highlighted strides in digital governance and security, including the establishment of a new Command and Control Centre and a fully digitised land registry. He said the state’s reform efforts, such as the unified tax regime, have helped raise its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to N35.9 billion within just seven months.

President Bola Tinubu, who recently visited the state to commission some of the completed projects, commended Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, describing it as a “model of results-driven governance.”
