Following a breathtaking nine-goal thriller in the UEFA Champions League, Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany shared a candid moment as their respective sides concluded a memorable semi-final first leg. Paris Saint-Germain emerged as the victors in the encounter, edging out Bayern Munich 5-4 at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday evening. The match began with the visitors taking the initiative when Harry Kane clinicaly converted a penalty, but the momentum shifted rapidly. PSG responded through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and a header from Joao Neves to seize the lead. Although Michael Olise appeared to have restored parity, Ousmane Dembele struck from the penalty spot to give the hosts the advantage heading into the break.
The second half continued at a frantic pace, with Dembele and Kvaratskhelia each adding a second goal to their tallies, seemingly putting the Ligue 1 champions in a dominant position. However, the Bavarian giants staged a late resurgence, with Dayot Upamecano and Luis Diaz finding the net to significantly narrow the deficit. Notably, Kompany was forced to witness the high-scoring affair from the spectator seating rather than the technical area, serving a one-match suspension handed down by UEFA. Upon descending to the pitch for the post-match formalities, he engaged in a brief but notable dialogue with Enrique.
During their interaction, the PSG manager questioned his counterpart’s perspective on the match’s quality from a distance.
“You watched the match from the stands, did you like it?” Enrique asked. To which Kompany succinctly responded, “No.”
Elaborating on the experience of being sidelined during the press briefing, the former Manchester City defender admitted his discomfort with the forced vantage point.
“It wasn’t the position I’d have liked to watch the game from. I told Luis Enrique I don’t understand how he likes to watch games from the stands! It was a game for people who love football,” Kompany explained.
The narrow one-goal margin sets the stage for an explosive second leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday. With both managers reflecting on a game that celebrated offensive football, the tactical adjustments for the return fixture in Munich will be highly anticipated as the two European heavyweights vie for a spot in the final.
