Ekiti State Gov’t Expands Digital Health Services to Improve Healthcare Delivery

Plans to expand digital health services in Ekiti State were unveiled on Monday, with the government promising better access, efficiency, and quality in healthcare delivery. The initiative aims to modernise patient records, integrate health data systems across facilities, and equip healthcare workers with tools to support diagnosis, treatment and monitoring.

It is part of the state’s effort to adopt the national digital health architecture and achieve Universal Health Coverage.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of a 35-member Technical Working Group on Digital Health in Ado Ekiti.

State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Oyebanji Filani, who was duly represented by Permanent Secretary, said the project will bridge gaps in health data management and unify health registries, electronic medical records and data exchange systems to improve decision-making and quality of care.

Filani noted that services under the Ulerawa flagship health insurance programme and some secondary health facilities have already been digitised for diagnosis, documentation, and treatment. He urged the committee to ensure successful implementation of the initiative.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Digital Economy, Ayodele Adeyanju, said digital health will allow unified patient records and easier access to medical histories, especially during emergencies.

The General Manager of the Ekiti State Health Insurance Scheme, Charles Doherty, described it as key for integrating the state’s health information systems into the national digital health ecosystem.

Digital Health Focal Person, Olayemi Ojo, called the inauguration a milestone, highlighting the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve outcomes.

The Technical Working Group includes representatives from ministries, agencies, civil society, private practitioners, and development partners.

The launch follows the state’s recent efforts to improve maternal health outcomes through digital solutions, reflecting Ekiti’s commitment to modernising healthcare delivery.
