The Governor of Oyo state, Seyi Makinde has called for improved welfare for military personnel across Nigeria, stressing that soldiers deserve greater support and recognition for the sacrifices they make in safeguarding the nation.
The governor made the appeal during the Chief of Army Staff Special Sallah Celebration with troops of the 2 Division Nigerian Army, held at the Forward Operating Base in Igbeti, Olorunsogo Local Government Area.
Speaking at the event, Makinde praised officers and soldiers serving in Oyo State, noting that their dedication and professionalism have played a major role in making the state one of the safest in Nigeria.
He said the peace and stability enjoyed in the state have directly contributed to significant progress in critical sectors such as the economy, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
According to the governor, the spirit of sacrifice associated with Ramadan mirrors the daily commitment of military personnel, many of whom remain on duty while others celebrate with their families.
“While many Nigerians are celebrating Eid with their loved ones, our men and women in uniform remain on the frontline, working tirelessly to keep the country safe,” he said.
Makinde emphasised that national development cannot thrive without security, adding that investment, trade, education, and social advancement all depend on a peaceful environment.
He urged military authorities to continue strengthening policies that prioritise troop welfare, insisting that personnel who protect the nation deserve better living conditions, motivation, and institutional support.
The governor also offered prayers for the protection of security personnel and their families, saying their sacrifices must never be in vain.
Representing the Chief of Army Staff, Major General MD Shagaya commended troops of the division for their discipline, resilience, and commitment, noting that their efforts have improved security across the operational area.
He also honoured personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty and acknowledged the support of the Oyo State Government in achieving operational successes.
In his remarks, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, thanked Governor Makinde for his sustained support to the military over the years and described the Sallah celebration as one of the morale-boosting initiatives for troops.
The event drew senior military officers, government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders, including the Oba Bashir Olalekan Siyanbola IV.
