The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has commended the Government of Sierra Leone and President Julius Maada Bio for facilitating the return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma to the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the regional body said Koroma’s return followed the Sierra Leonean government’s decision to drop charges against the former president in the interest of national reconciliation, unity and lasting peace.
ECOWAS described the development as an important step towards strengthening peace and stability in Sierra Leone.
The Commission also expressed appreciation to ECOWAS leaders who contributed to the process, particularly Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his leadership and support in hosting Koroma and facilitating his safe return to Sierra Leone.
The regional body said the efforts demonstrated the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving political tensions and promoting peace among member states.
Koroma, who served as Sierra Leone’s president from 2007 to 2018, had been outside the country amid legal proceedings before his return.
ECOWAS said it remained committed to supporting initiatives that promote national reconciliation, democratic stability and lasting peace across the West African region.
