In a notable shift in political allegiance, Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno has reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to his predecessor and mentor, former Governor Udom Emmanuel, despite his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at a pro-APC rally held on Monday in Eket, Governor Eno dismissed speculations of a rift between him and Emmanuel, clarifying that their personal and political bond remains intact.
“Let me make it abundantly clear: there is absolutely no issue between me and my political father, former Governor Udom Emmanuel. I still visit him, we speak regularly, and I remain his political son,” Eno told the cheering crowd.
Governor Eno, who emerged as Emmanuel’s hand-picked successor in 2023 under the PDP platform, shocked many in June when he announced his switch to the APC.
However, he explained that the move was a strategic decision made in the best interest of the state, aimed at attracting greater federal attention and development support under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“My decision to join the APC is not about personal ambition—it’s about the future of Akwa Ibom. It’s about aligning with the centre for the benefit of our people,” he stated.
Reiterating his continued reverence for his political mentor, Eno added:
“Governor Udom Emmanuel brought me into politics. He supported me, guided me, and helped me emerge as governor. For that, he will always have my respect, admiration, and support.”
The governor’s comments come amid political speculation over the implications of his defection and its potential impact on his long-standing relationship with key figures in the PDP.
While Udom Emmanuel has not publicly commented on Eno’s political move, sources close to both camps suggest that private communication between the two remains active, reinforcing the governor’s claims of enduring loyalty.
Eno’s defection marks a significant realignment in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape and could reshape dynamics ahead of future elections.
However, his public affirmation of respect for his predecessor appears aimed at maintaining unity among his supporters across party lines.
