Coalition Not the Solution — Ex-Governor Udenwa Urges PDP to Resolve Internal Crisis

Former Imo State governor opposes proposed Atiku-Obi coalition, says PDP must regain strength to lead opposition without external alliances.

Former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa, has rejected ongoing discussions about a coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking  during a televised interview on Tuesday, Udenwa insisted that the PDP should focus on resolving its internal crisis rather than forming alliances, suggesting that the party’s dysfunction is the only reason a coalition is even being considered.

“The PDP, as the leading opposition party, is currently in crisis. Once that is resolved — and I believe it will be — the issue of coalition will no longer be necessary,” he said.

His comments come amid reports suggesting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has offered Labour Party’s Peter Obi a vice-presidential position on a proposed one-term coalition ticket for the 2027 polls.

While acknowledging that a coalition could become viable if the PDP remains in disarray, Udenwa stressed that such alliances are not the ideal solution for a strong opposition.

“If the PDP remains in its current dilemma, a coalition may work to some extent. Nigerians are desperate for an alternative due to the APC’s poor performance,” he added.

However, Udenwa maintained that the better path forward is for the PDP to regain its footing and lead from a position of strength — with other smaller parties potentially aligning under its banner.

“The best option is for the PDP to rediscover itself. Other parties can then join or cooperate with PDP under its platform — not just a coalition of individuals with personal ambitions,” he concluded.

Udenwa’s remarks reflect the ongoing debate within opposition circles over the best strategy to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next electoral cycle.
