CAF Launches Disciplinary Investigation into Chaotic Scenes Following Nigeria’s Quarter-Final Victory Over Algeria

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has formally initiated an investigation into the volatile confrontations that erupted after Nigeria’s 2–0 triumph over Algeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals. According to reports from Africa Soccer, the continental governing body is currently analyzing a comprehensive dossier of evidence, including official submissions from match referees, stadium security personnel, and accredited media representatives present at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.

The probe aims to address the breakdown of order that overshadowed the Super Eagles’ advancement to the semi-final stage.

On the pitch, Nigeria demonstrated tactical superiority as star striker Victor Osimhen and forward Akor Adams both netted clinical goals in the second half to secure the win. While the Nigerian side celebrated their progression, the final whistle triggered an immediate and aggressive reaction from the Algerian contingent. The Desert Foxes directed their intense frustration toward the officiating crew, alleging that specific refereeing decisions unfairly influenced the outcome of the high-stakes encounter.

The situation escalated rapidly as several Algerian players and technical officials reportedly attempted to physically assault the center referee, Issa Sy, and his officiating assistants. This aggression forced stadium security to intervene immediately, forming a protective cordon around the referees to facilitate their safe exit into the dressing rooms. Despite these efforts, reports indicate that the harassment continued within the stadium tunnels, marking a significant breach of CAF’s disciplinary regulations regarding the protection of match officials.

Furthermore, the unrest extended into the spectator stands, where sections of the Algerian support base engaged in disorderly conduct. Witnesses observed fans attempting to breach security barriers and storm the field of play, while others reportedly vandalized stadium infrastructure and threw projectiles toward security forces. CAF’s Disciplinary Board is now reviewing video footage of these incidents to identify the perpetrators and determine appropriate sanctions.
