Braganca Applauds Raya’s Heroics as Sporting CP Bows Out of Europe

Sporting CP vice-captain Daniel Braganca has singled out Arsenal shot-stopper David Raya for high praise following the Portuguese club’s exit from the UEFA Champions League. The London side solidified their place in the semi-finals on Wednesday night with a disciplined 0-0 stalemate at the Emirates Stadium, protecting the slim 1-1 aggregate advantage they established during the opening leg in Lisbon.

Raya’s influence on the tie was established early, as he earned UEFA’s Player of the Match honors in the first encounter for a series of spectacular interventions that frustrated Sporting’s offensive efforts. While the Spanish international was less busy in the return leg—facing only a single shot on target—Braganca believes the goalkeeper’s presence and earlier performances were fundamental to Arsenal’s progression.

“Being eliminated for what we did hurts,” the midfielder admitted in an interview with Sport TV. “It left a bitter taste after the game because we could have scored and brought the match back to a draw. They also had chances, but Arsenal has an extraordinary goalkeeper who makes it harder for the other team to score.”

The elimination leaves Sporting to reflect on missed opportunities, while Arsenal’s attention shifts immediately back to their domestic campaign. Mikel Arteta’s squad is currently embroiled in a fierce battle for the Premier League crown and cannot afford any lapses in concentration. Their resolve will be tested this coming Sunday in a high-stakes showdown against title rivals Manchester City, a fixture that could ultimately define their season.
