Big Brother Naija star Bella Okagbue has addressed the controversy surrounding her split from fellow reality star Sheggz, saying she eventually stopped placing her faith in promises and began judging the relationship by recurring patterns.
Bella explained that she had deliberately stayed quiet since the breakup because she believed some aspects of their relationship were better kept away from the public.
In a statement shared on her social media page, the reality star said she genuinely loved Sheggz and stood by their relationship because she believed in what they had.
She also said she agreed to give the relationship another opportunity because she believed people were capable of changing.
However, Bella stressed that believing in someone’s potential did not require her to wait endlessly for that change to happen.
“The person everyone experiences publicly isn’t always the person you experience privately,” she wrote.
The reality star also addressed conversations surrounding marriage and a ring Sheggz had previously said he purchased for her.
According to Bella, material symbols could not resolve the problems that had already made the relationship difficult to sustain.
“A ring doesn’t fix what made a relationship impossible,” she said.
Bella further disputed some accounts of the relationship that have circulated online, saying they did not correspond with what she personally experienced.
She noted that there were other details she had chosen not to disclose and would only discuss them if and when she felt prepared to do so.
Reflecting on the promises she said were made during the relationship, Bella wrote: “A hundred promises. Not one fulfilled.”
She said that point marked a shift in how she viewed the relationship, as she stopped relying on assurances and began observing repeated behaviour.
Bella maintained that she had given the relationship love, loyalty and another opportunity, but eventually reached a stage where she could no longer reconcile loyalty with the absence of trust, respect and peace.
Despite the outcome, she said she did not regret giving the relationship another chance.
The reality star concluded that she had decided to prioritise herself and accept whatever consequences came with leaving.
“So today, I choose myself. I choose differently, regardless of what comes with it,” she wrote.
