Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has confirmed that more than 60 bandits were killed during a recent attack on Mansur village in Alkaleri Local Government Area, while 21 residents, including 13 vigilantes and 8 civilians, also lost their lives.
The deadly ambush, which occurred two weeks ago, underscored the persistent security challenges facing rural communities in the state.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the affected communities on Thursday, Governor Mohammed described the incident as a tragic but revealing confrontation that demonstrated the courage and resilience of local vigilantes and security forces.
“Despite the attackers’ superior firepower, our local forces stood firm. They paid a heavy price, but they also inflicted greater damage — over 60 of the criminals were neutralized,” the governor said.
The governor’s visit covered Mansur, Gwana, Duguri, Yelwan Duguri, and parts of Bauchi LGA, where he conveyed condolences on behalf of both the state and federal governments. He assured residents that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is aware of the attack and working with security agencies to restore calm.
To support affected families, the governor announced the following financial relief packages:
₦5 million to families of each slain vigilante
₦3 million to families of each civilian victim
₦20 million for logistics and operations to boost local vigilante efforts
He also disclosed a comprehensive plan to strengthen local security, including the recruitment of over 2,100 new vigilantes across Bauchi by the end of the year. Initial recruitment will prioritize areas most affected by banditry, with 300 to 500 personnel.
“These recruits will be placed on a structured minimum wage and professionally trained by security agencies to ensure discipline and effectiveness,” he added.
Governor Mohammed emphasized the role of community collaboration, calling on traditional rulers and residents to help identify informants aiding criminal groups.
In a passionate remark to underscore his dedication, he declared:
“These people came to the wrong place. We are ready to sacrifice everything for our communities. If I must take off this Babanriga and join you in the field, I will do it, In Sha Allah.”
The Bauchi State government has also initiated dialogue with the National Security Adviser’s office to ramp up federal support and intelligence sharing in ongoing efforts to curb insecurity in the region.
