Basketmouth Faults Culture of Glorifying Scandals Over Success

Nigerian comedian and actor Basketmouth has criticised what he described as society’s growing obsession with negativity, saying genuine achievements are often ignored while scandals dominate public attention.

In a post shared on his Instagram page, the entertainer accused some Nigerian bloggers of profiting from controversy while giving little visibility to stories of success and innovation.

According to him, people who build businesses, create employment opportunities, break records, or positively impact lives rarely receive the same level of attention as individuals caught in embarrassing situations.

“Some Nigerian bloggers have mastered the art of turning negativity into premium content. One scandal trends for days, but genuine excellence barely gets a headline,” he wrote.

Basketmouth questioned why controversy appears to generate more public interest than hard work and accomplishment.

He said society must reflect on when celebrating mediocrity became normal and why outstanding achievements no longer attract widespread recognition.

“Somebody builds something remarkable, breaks barriers, creates jobs, sells out shows, changes lives – we get silence. But let there be one embarrassing moment and suddenly every platform becomes CNN,” he added.

The comedian warned that consistently amplifying failure and outrage over success sends the wrong message to younger generations and discourages excellence.

He called for a cultural shift that prioritises celebrating discipline, creativity, consistency, and meaningful accomplishments instead of gossip and public downfalls.

Basketmouth also argued that a society focused mainly on negativity risks losing its appreciation for greatness and genuine progress.

His remarks have sparked conversations online, with many social media users agreeing that positive stories often receive far less engagement than controversy-driven content.
