Barcelona Strip Ter Stegen of Captaincy Amid Disciplinary Action

Barcelona have relieved Marc-André ter Stegen of his captaincy duties, the club confirmed in an official statement released on Thursday.

The decision comes as part of ongoing disciplinary action taken against the German goalkeeper, according to the LaLiga champions.

As part of the announcement, Barcelona also confirmed that vice-captain Ronald Araújo will now assume the role of club captain during this period.

The club’s statement included the following: “This decision is a result of disciplinary proceedings initiated against Marc-André ter Stegen. Ronald Araújo, the current vice-captain, will temporarily take over the responsibilities of first captain.”

Ter Stegen had revealed last month that he underwent back surgery and expected to be sidelined for approximately three months.

His recent conduct has reportedly drawn the ire of club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco, both of whom are said to have supported the move to strip him of the armband.
