Bangkok Market Mass Shooting Leaves Six Dead, Including Gunman

In a shocking midday attack, a mass shooting erupted at the popular Or Tor Kor Market in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district on Monday, leaving six people dead, including the suspected gunman.

The incident occurred at around 12:31 p.m. local time (05:31 GMT) in one of the city’s busiest markets, renowned for its fresh produce and constant flow of locals and tourists.

According to the Royal Thai Police, the gunman targeted security personnel stationed at the market, killing five guards before turning the weapon on himself. One additional person was injured and is receiving medical treatment.

“This is being investigated as a mass shooting,” said Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief for Bang Sue district. “We’re actively working to determine the motive and are reviewing surveillance footage for further leads.”

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage reportedly captured the suspect wearing a black T-shirt, camouflage shorts, a cap, and a backpack slung across his chest, according to Thai Public Broadcasting Service.

While the motive behind the deadly rampage remains unknown, police say they are exploring possible connections to ongoing border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, though no definitive link has been established.

Thailand has struggled with frequent incidents of gun violence — among the highest rates in Southeast Asia. In one of the country’s most tragic mass shootings in 2020, a disgruntled soldier killed 29 people and injured 58 others in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Authorities have sealed off the market and surrounding areas as forensic teams and investigators comb the scene. Emergency services remain on standby, and the situation is under close scrutiny by top national security officials.
