Aviation Leaders Converge in Lagos to Chart Nigeria’s Path to Hub Status

Industry stakeholders to explore strategies for boosting GDP through aviation growth at high-level March 26 summit….

Key stakeholders in Nigeria’s aviation industry are set to gather in Lagos for a crucial meeting aimed at redefining the sector’s role in driving economic growth and positioning the country as a major aviation hub in Africa.

The event, organized by the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI), is scheduled for March 26, 2026, as part of its first-quarter Business Breakfast Meeting. It is expected to bring together influential voices across the aviation value chain for in-depth discussions on unlocking the sector’s full economic potential.

According to a statement issued by ASRTI’s Publicity Secretary, Albinus Chiedu, the meeting will focus on the theme: “Boosting Aviation Sector Contribution to GDP: The Importance of an Aviation Hub.” The gathering aims to spark meaningful conversations around policy direction, infrastructure expansion, and increased private sector participation.

At the heart of the discussions is the concept of developing Nigeria into a central aviation hub, a model where airlines consolidate operations through a major airport, enabling efficient passenger and cargo connectivity across multiple destinations. Industry experts believe such a system could significantly enhance traffic flow, improve efficiency, and generate substantial economic returns.

ASRTI noted that the forum will provide a strategic platform to examine how Nigeria can capitalize on its geographic advantage and rising passenger numbers to emerge as a leading air transport hub on the continent.

Delivering the keynote address will be the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Olubunmi Kuku. Her presentation is expected to set the tone for robust dialogue on practical steps required to strengthen infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and expand the aviation sector’s contribution to the nation’s GDP.

The event will also feature two high-level panel sessions comprising leading industry figures. Among them are George Uriesi of Ibom Air, Wale Babalakin of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services, Ado Sanusi of Aero Contractors, and Djamel Muradov representing Air France/KLM. These experts are expected to share insights on airline operations, airport management, and the key requirements for building a globally competitive aviation hub.

A second panel will spotlight the role of allied aviation services in supporting sector growth. Industry professionals such as Thomas Ogungbangbe, Segun Musa, Motayo Williams, Damilola Ogunseye, and Seinde Fadeni will explore how services like fuelling, ground handling, engineering, logistics, and in-flight catering can drive value creation when effectively integrated into a hub system.

The discussions will also feature contributions from the leadership of AVSATEL Communications and Dominion Air, offering perspectives on emerging aviation services and technological support systems.

ASRTI emphasized that since the launch of its Business Breakfast Meetings in 2015, the platform has played a significant role in shaping policy conversations and advancing reforms across key areas of the aviation industry, including safety standards, infrastructure development, airline operations, and regulatory practices.

As momentum builds ahead of the meeting, expectations are high that the outcomes could provide a clear roadmap for transforming Nigeria into a major aviation gateway, one capable of boosting economic growth, attracting investment, and strengthening the country’s position in the global air transport network.
