Atula Vows to Restore Nigeria’s Global Wrestling Status, Eyes Federation Presidency

President of the Veteran Wrestlers Association of Nigeria, Morris Atula, has reaffirmed the association’s dedication to restoring Nigeria’s prominence in global wrestling. Atula, a former Nigerian, Commonwealth, and World Wrestling champion, also confirmed his intention to contest for the presidency of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation.
Speaking on the group’s mission, Atula said veteran wrestlers are prepared to partner with the National Sports Commission and relevant stakeholders to scout, nurture, and develop a new generation of elite wrestling talent.
Now chairman of the Edo State Wrestling Association, Atula recently returned to Nigeria after spending over 30 years in Europe. He revealed plans are underway to launch zonal wrestling championships across the country’s six geo-political zones to reignite interest in the sport.
“We are currently in talks with the Enugu and Plateau State governments to back our efforts in reviving wrestling in Nigeria. Once our plans are solidified, we’ll move forward with a full launch,” Atula stated.
He also applauded the Nigerian contingent’s performance at the recently concluded African Wrestling Championship in Morocco, noting that Nigeria’s ambitions should go beyond continental dominance.
“The Veteran Wrestlers Association of Nigeria commends the work of the outgoing federation board led by Daniel Igali,” he said. “As experienced professionals and passionate stakeholders, we are stepping forward. Nigeria must reclaim its place on the global wrestling stage — the future is promising.”
Atula praised the leadership of the National Sports Commission, chaired by Shehu Dikko and supported by Director General Bukola Olapade, for encouraging veteran involvement in youth development and talent discovery.
He noted that the zonal championships would begin in Enugu and Jos before expanding nationwide. In addition, the association aims to improve training conditions, welfare packages for wrestlers and coaches, and attract corporate sponsorships to enhance facilities and provide local and international exposure.
Looking ahead to the 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway 2024 — which kicks off next weekend — Atula emphasized that veterans would be present to scout emerging talent and assess development needs.
