At Least Five Dead, Five Injured in Amazon Cargo Plane Crash at Miami Airport

At least five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport, struck several vehicles and caught fire.

The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon, was landing shortly before 2 p.m. local time on Sunday after a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it ran beyond the end of the runway and crossed onto a nearby road.

The aircraft, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, collided with several vehicles before coming to rest near the airport and catching fire.

Five people were pronounced dead, while five others were injured. Three of the injured were taken to trauma centres in critical condition, while two others received hospital treatment.

Emergency crews faced a complex rescue operation, with some people trapped inside vehicles struck by the aircraft. The pilot and co-pilot were also trapped in the cockpit following the crash.

More than 60 emergency response units and about 200 firefighters and rescue personnel were deployed to the scene. Crews battled the fire and worked to contain a fuel leak from the aircraft.

The crash triggered a temporary ground stop at Miami International Airport, with all runways and taxiways initially closed. Operations later resumed on a limited basis, although hundreds of flights were delayed or cancelled.

The cause of the crash remains unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have launched separate investigations, with the NTSB deploying a team to determine what caused the runway overrun.

Amazon has expressed condolences to the victims and their families and pledged to cooperate fully with investigators.

The incident is the second fatal crash involving an aircraft operating for Amazon Prime Air since 2019, when an Atlas Air Boeing 767 cargo plane crashed in Texas, killing all three people aboard.
