Ashley Cole backs Arsenal as Premier League title favourites

Former Chelsea defender Ashley Cole believes Arsenal are currently the strongest side in the Premier League and says last season’s title triumph has given Mikel Arteta’s squad added confidence and belief.

The Gunners made an impressive start to their title defence with a 3-0 home victory over newly promoted Coventry at the Emirates, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard finding the net. The result came just five days after Arsenal defeated Manchester City 3-0 to lift the Community Shield for a record 18th time.

Arsenal will now look to maintain their strong start when they travel to face Aston Villa, managed by former Gunners boss Unai Emery. Villa endured a difficult opening game, suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brighton. Arsenal will then welcome Chelsea in what promises to be a major encounter between Cole’s two former clubs.

Chelsea also began the campaign with a victory, edging London rivals Fulham on Monday night. Cole Palmer showed signs of returning to his best, while Morgan Rogers marked his competitive debut for the Blues with a goal.

Asked by Sky Sports to name his title favourites, Cole said, “I think it’s too early to say.

“I believe Arsenal appears to be the strongest with their new additions and the confidence and belief stemming from their remarkable season last year. However, it is still too early to determine.”

Cole was also encouraged by Chelsea’s performance against Fulham and believes manager Xabi Alonso will be pleased with the reaction from his players.

“Every job is challenging; it’s about the response you elicit from your players,” said the former England left-back, who won the Premier League with Chelsea during the 2009/10 season.
