Agbara Nla: The Return sets box-office records with N170.6m opening

Faith-based Nollywood film Agbara Nla: The Return has made a powerful start at the Nigerian box office, earning more than N170.6 million within its first four days in cinemas.

Film distributor Nile Group announced the figure on Monday, describing the opening as a major milestone for the movie and faith-based cinema in Nigeria.

Celebrating the turnout, the distributor said the film had drawn packed cinemas and sold-out screenings across the country.

“The revival is here. The power is moving. Agbara Nla: The Return opened with N170.6m+. It can only be God,” Nile Group said in a statement.

The distributor also thanked moviegoers for their support, highlighting the strong attendance recorded since the film opened.

Beyond its earnings, Agbara Nla: The Return reportedly set three box-office records during its opening weekend.

According to Nile Group, it recorded the biggest non-December Nollywood opening weekend, the biggest October opening weekend, and the biggest opening weekend for a faith-based film in Nigeria.

The film is a contemporary adaptation of the 1993 Mount Zion classic Agbara Nla, created by Evangelist Mike Bamiloye and later released in English as The Ultimate Power in 1994.

The new adaptation returns audiences to Muwonleru, a village under the influence of herbalist Isawuru. The story follows two Christians, Olaboye and Olatomi, who leave the city to evangelise the community.

Mike Bamiloye reprises his role as Isawuru, while Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Mike-Bamiloye directed the new production.

Produced by Mount Zion Film Productions in collaboration with Circuits and Sozo Films, the film arrives more than three decades after the original.

Agbara Nla: The Return is currently showing in cinemas nationwide, with its opening performance positioning the revival as one of the notable Nollywood releases of the year.
