Adesina Appointed to World Food Prize Foundation’s Council of Advisors

The World Food Prize Foundation has announced the appointment of Akinwumi Adesina, the outgoing President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), to its prestigious Council of Advisors.

The announcement was made in New York by the Foundation’s President, Mashal Husain, who praised Adesina’s lifelong commitment to agricultural transformation and sustainable development across Africa.

“President Adesina embodies the values and vision of Dr. Norman Borlaug—transforming bold ideas into tangible impact,” said Husain. “His dedication to agricultural innovation and economic growth makes him an exceptional addition to our Council. We are honoured to welcome him back to the Foundation in this vital role.”

The Council of Advisors comprises influential global figures, including former heads of state, ministers, and leaders in agricultural science, education, research, and policy. The council provides strategic guidance to help the Foundation fulfill its mission and preserve the legacy of its founder, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug.

Reacting to his appointment, Adesina expressed deep appreciation and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing food security.

“Norman Borlaug was not only a mentor but also a personal inspiration whose passion for ending hunger shaped my journey,” he said. “As a Laureate, I carry his legacy with me, and I look forward to working with the Foundation to champion science-driven solutions that uplift farmers, feed nations, and transform lives.”

Adesina received the World Food Prize in 2017 in recognition of his decades-long efforts to boost agricultural productivity and food security in Africa. A development economist and agricultural expert, he previously served as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (2011–2015) and as Vice President for Policy and Partnerships at the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).

His appointment marks a return to a foundation that once honoured his work and now calls upon his leadership to shape the future of global food policy.
