Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation magazine, Chief Dele Momodu, has declared unwavering support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the preferred presidential candidate of the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on a televised interview, Momodu emphasized that his endorsement of Atiku does not preclude members of the Obidient movement—supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi—from backing their preferred aspirant.
“My support for Atiku does not mean Obidients can’t support Obi. Everyone has the freedom to choose,” Momodu stated.
Justifying his position, Momodu described Atiku as the most capable and experienced among the current aspirants within the ADC alliance, stressing that his decision is based on merit and political realism.
“I have assessed all the aspirants in the coalition. Atiku remains the best suited to challenge the ruling party effectively,” he added.
Momodu also alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is quietly rooting for a southern candidate to emerge from the opposition coalition — a strategy, he claims, driven by fear of Atiku’s national reach and electoral strength.
“The APC wants a southerner as the ADC flagbearer because they are afraid of facing Atiku. He remains their biggest threat,” he said.
The opposition ADC coalition — recently unveiled with Atiku, Obi, former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Governor Nasir el-Rufai seen as key figures — is positioning itself as a united front against President Bola Tinubu and the APC ahead of the next general elections.
