
The Nigerian football community is in shock and mourning following the passing of iconic coach and former national team captain, Christian Chukwu, MFR. Affectionately known as “The Chairman,” Chukwu breathed his last today between 9:00 am and 10:00 am.
A Legendary Career

Chukwu’s illustrious career was marked by numerous achievements, including:
- Historic AFCON Win: He captained Nigeria to its first AFCON title in 1980, a momentous occasion that cemented his legacy in Nigerian football.
- Continental Success: He led Enugu Rangers FC to victory in the 1977 Africa Cup Winners Cup, showcasing his prowess as a tactician.
- Mentorship and Coaching: Served as assistant coach to the Golden Eaglets (1985) and the Super Eagles (1994), pivotal in shaping Nigeria’s football future.
A Life of Triumph and Adversity

Chukwu faced health challenges in 2019, battling prostate cancer that affected his leg. A GoFundMe appeal was launched to support his treatment, but thanks to the generosity of businessman Femi Otedola, Chukwu received the medical care he needed overseas.
