US Condemns Deadly Attack on Cameroonian Soldiers in Nigeria’s Lake Chad Basin

The United States has strongly condemned the recent killing of Cameroonian soldiers serving in the Multinational Joint Task Force in Nigeria’s Lake Chad Basin. In a statement released on Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé expressed its deepest condolences to the government and people of Cameroon, calling the attack a “heinous” act of terrorism.

The statement read, “The United States Embassy in Yaoundé condemns the heinous March 24 terrorist attack against Cameroonian soldiers stationed in Nigeria as part of the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Basin.” It further expressed the U.S. government’s solidarity with Cameroon, emphasizing the sacrifices made by the soldiers in defending both Cameroon and the broader region from terrorism.

“The dedication and sacrifice of these soldiers in the fight against terrorism stand as a powerful testament to their unwavering commitment to the safety and security of Cameroon and the region,” the embassy added. “Their legacy will not be forgotten, and it will continue to inspire future generations.”

The tragic incident occurred on March 24 when Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly assault on a military base in Wolgo, Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. The attack resulted in the deaths of several soldiers during a fierce gun battle. The U.S. statement reaffirmed its support for Cameroon during this period of mourning, stating, “We stand with all Cameroonians as they grieve the loss of their fellow citizens.”

The attack marks yet another tragic chapter in the ongoing struggle against terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin, an area plagued by insurgent violence from groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.
