Wike Urges Patience as Nigerians Endure Economic Hardship, Assures Better Days Ahead

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on Nigerians to remain patient as the government navigates the country’s current economic challenges.

Speaking in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, Wike led members of the G-5 group and other political associates on a condolence visit to Governor Seyi Makinde following the death of his elder brother, Sunday Makinde, who passed away on January 24, 2025, at the age of 65.

Accompanied by former governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Samuel Ortom (Benue), as well as several senators, including Sandy Onor, Philip Aduda, Olaka Nwogu, Mao Ohuabunwa, and Chibudom Nwuche, Wike extended heartfelt condolences to the Makinde family during their time of grief.

In his remarks, Wike acknowledged the economic difficulties Nigerians are facing but stressed that President Bola Tinubu’s policies are aimed at addressing the country’s economic challenges. “I have always told people to be patient with this government,” he said. “This country has faced significant challenges in the past, and it’s essential to recognize the progress we’ve made.”

Wike urged Nigerians to understand that meaningful change takes time, emphasizing that the ongoing economic policies would eventually lead to improvements. “We have to give it time. It’s not like a miracle,” he said. “The policies Mr. President is implementing will have some effects, and people will feel them, but in the end, we will achieve what we want to achieve.”

He reassured the public that despite the current hardships, better days are ahead. “Although we may have to endure some hardships now, we should not panic. Mr. President genuinely cares for our country, and I assure you that better days are ahead.”

While extending his sympathies to the Makinde family, Wike also underscored the importance of unity in times of loss. “In this moment of profound loss, we are here to offer our love and solidarity,” he said. “We stand by our brother, Makinde, in this trying time. Losing a loved one is never easy, and we want to assure him that he is not alone.”

In a separate show of support, Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, led a delegation of party leaders, including former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, to commiserate with Governor Makinde.

During interactions with both Wike’s and George’s entourages, Makinde expressed his gratitude for their support and solidarity. He also urged them to reflect on the unexpected passing of his brother, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing physical wellness, particularly for those in public office.
