ECOWAS SEEKS STRONGER DEFENCE COOPERATION THROUGH INDIGENOUS INDUSTRY

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has called for stronger defence cooperation among African countries through the development of indigenous defence industries.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, made the call while delivering a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the Africa International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026 in Lagos.

The exhibition, which runs from October 26 to 30, has brought together political leaders, defence policymakers, military commanders, defence industry operators, researchers and security experts from across Africa and beyond.

Diop commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to regional peace, security and integration, describing AFRIDEX as a timely demonstration of Nigeria’s role in promoting stability and cooperation across West Africa.

He said the exhibition provided an important platform for stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration in addressing the region’s security challenges and advancing indigenous defence capabilities.

The ECOWAS Commission’s participation underscores the regional bloc’s interest in strengthening partnerships and promoting greater cooperation in the defence sector.

The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of President Tinubu, who was represented by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
