Rivers United coach Daniel reacts to Rangers’ CAF Champions League exit

Rivers United assistant coach Olanrewaju Yemi Daniel has weighed in on Rangers’ elimination from the CAF Champions League, renewing concerns over the competitiveness of Nigerian clubs on the continent.

Rangers were beaten 3-0 by MC Alger in Friday’s second-leg encounter of their second preliminary-round tie, crashing out 3-2 on aggregate after surrendering their 2-0 first-leg lead.

Reacting to the outcome, Daniel recalled previously warning about the difficulties Nigerian teams face in continental competitions, saying his concerns had been dismissed as excuses.

“I said this early this year but they said I was giving excuses,” Daniel wrote on his social media handle.

“I have been in the continent for the past 4 seasons consecutively.”

The coach also cited his experience of reaching the group stage in consecutive seasons with two different clubs in CAF competitions.

“We can only try but the gaps dey wide,” Daniel added, pointing to the gulf between Nigerian teams and their North African rivals.
