Bayern expect Kompany to miss weeks as recovery takes priority

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany could spend several weeks away from the touchline after collapsing while observing the club’s reserve team in training, with sporting director Max Eberl insisting there will be no rush to bring him back.

The club announced on Friday that the 40-year-old Belgian had received medical attention and was undergoing comprehensive hospital examinations. His assistants will oversee training and matches during his absence.

Speaking on Saturday, Eberl said Bayern would allow Kompany sufficient time to recover without imposing a deadline.

“Vinnie will get all the time he needs. We’re not going to start setting up any timelines. We need to figure out what it is, and then it’s about what the recovery time means. We won’t be talking about days, but about weeks. That’s clear to all of us,” he said.

Reports indicate that Kompany had experienced health issues before his collapse.

He missed training and a pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Arsenal but returned to the dugout for the 2-2 draw.

His absence also complicates preparations for Sunday’s Bundesliga trip to Freiburg, with assistant coach Aaron Danks expected to take charge.

Eberl expressed confidence in the existing coaching team, dismissing any suggestion of restructuring during Kompany’s recovery.

“We have such a fantastic coaching staff, whose head is Vinnie. But the success is based on an outstanding team in the background. There’s not the slightest thought of changing anything there,” he said.

Bayern have yet to disclose what caused Kompany’s collapse. Eberl said the club would await the medical findings before drawing conclusions about his condition.

Kompany arrived at Bayern in 2024 after managing Burnley and guided the Munich side to the Bundesliga title in his debut season. The club extended his contract in October 2025 until June 2029.
