Rema Explains Why He Keeps His Wealth Out of the Spotlight

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has explained why he avoids excessively displaying his wealth and achievements on social media, saying he does not want young people to feel pressured by his success.

The singer made the remarks during an interview with Jam FM, where he discussed his influence on young fans and the expectations that can come with being a successful entertainer.

Rema, 26, said many young people admire him and aspire to achieve similar success. He explained that this awareness influences how he presents his lifestyle online.

According to the singer, he does not want people to compare their progress with his or feel compelled to achieve success before they are ready.

“A lot of young people look up to me, whether they are my fans or not. I have something they want or dream of, so I do my best not to make anyone feel bad about themselves or feel pressured,” he said.

‘Everybody has their time’

Rema noted that seeing another young person’s achievements can make some people feel they are falling behind, even when their circumstances and journeys are different.

He said he was particularly concerned about young people who might feel compelled to rush their progress after seeing his lifestyle.

The singer added that although some people have advised him not to worry about how his lifestyle might affect others, he remains conscious that his displays of wealth could be interpreted differently by different audiences.

“I just care about the kids who are under pressure,” he said.

Rema also highlighted the pressure some parents place on their children, particularly when choosing careers and courses of study.

He observed that some young people pursue fields they have little interest in because their parents want them to secure well-paying jobs.

He said he did not want his public image to add to those expectations or make young people feel inadequate about their own circumstances.

Why Rema prefers a simple style

The singer said his preference for keeping things simple also influences his fashion choices.

He identified streetwear as a style he enjoys and said he does not regularly wear expensive designer labels.

Rema acknowledged that jewellery and watches are among the more luxurious elements of his personal style.

His comments offer insight into how the singer views his influence beyond music, particularly his responsibility towards younger audiences who may see his career as a benchmark for their own ambitions.

Rather than encouraging comparisons, Rema said he wants young people to allow themselves time to grow and pursue success at their own pace.
