The Free Zone Command of the Nigeria Customs Service generated N557.02 billion in revenue between January and August 2026, reflecting the growing economic importance of the Free Zone corridor.
Speaking at a handover ceremony, the outgoing Area Controller of Customs, Hauwa Abubakar Anifowoshe, said the command’s performance demonstrated its increasing role in revenue mobilisation and administration.
She attributed the achievement to teamwork, noting that the progress recorded under her leadership was the result of collective efforts by officers and staff.
After 35 years of service, Anifowoshe said her administration also prioritised staff welfare, stronger ties with host communities and collaboration with sister agencies and key stakeholders, including Free Zone operators, Lekki Deep Sea Port and bonded terminals.
“Whatever successes we recorded during my time as Area Controller were not achieved by me alone. They were the product of teamwork, discipline, professionalism, and the collective commitment of every officer and member of staff,” she said.
Anifowoshe formally handed over the command to Acting Customs Area Comptroller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Olufemi Kukoyi, who pledged to consolidate the gains made under the outgoing administration.
Kukoyi’s administration is expected to focus on efficiency, technology, enforcement and trade facilitation as it assumes responsibility for the command.
Anifowoshe also urged officers and stakeholders to give her successor the cooperation extended to her administration, stressing the importance of maintaining strong relationships beyond changes in leadership.
“Positions are temporary, but relationships endure,” she said, urging officers and stakeholders to uphold respect, dignity and goodwill in their dealings.
