Azeez Alade Urges More Government Funding for Nollywood Filmmakers

Veteran actor and filmmaker Azeez Taofeek Alade has called for increased government financial support for Nigerian filmmakers, saying production costs remain a major challenge in Nollywood.

Alade, who has spent three decades in the industry, said producers require significant funding to deliver quality film productions.

“If the government of Nigeria looks our way with full support, we would be very glad, because any producer needs a huge amount of money for production,” he said.

The filmmaker, however, acknowledged recent government interventions aimed at supporting actors and filmmakers, describing the development as a welcome step.

Alade began his acting career in 1996 with the Ifepade Theatre Group and has since been involved in both acting and film production.

His production credits include Gbafun in 2005, Alhaji Agba in 2008, Ododolowo in 2010 and Edan in 2015. He also produced the 2026 film Ika (Wickedness).

As an actor, Alade has appeared in films including Owomalu, Obanikoro, Esugbayi Eleko, Dalemo, Majala and Afarawe, directed by Musbau Olashupo.

Despite the financial and logistical challenges associated with filmmaking, Alade said he remained optimistic about the future of the Nigerian film industry.

He said filmmakers continued to make progress and expressed confidence that his own brand would reach another level in the coming years.

Reflecting on his career, Alade recalled facing ridicule during his early days as he pursued a place in indigenous cinema.

He said his faith had helped him navigate difficult periods, adding that challenges were part of life and could be overcome.

The veteran also advised young creatives hoping to establish themselves in Nollywood to remain patient and persistent.

“Be patient. Slow and steady wins the race,” he said.
