Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension from Portugal duty if his departure from the national team camp is deemed an unjustified abandonment of the squad.
The Daily Mail reports that any ban could range from one to six months under the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary regulations.
The federation’s code states: “Any player who, having been regularly called up, unjustifiably abandons or fails to appear for training, a match, or any activity of the national teams or related to the sporting representation of the FPF or Portugal, will be sanctioned with a suspension of one to six months.”
Ronaldo left the team’s camp on Wednesday following a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time.
The 41-year-old has since been replaced as captain by Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, while Rafael Leao wore Ronaldo’s No. 7 shirt against Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.
