Nigerian rapper Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf, popularly known as CDQ, has stirred debate with a bold claim about his standing among the country’s top rappers.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Faloh Frequency podcast, CDQ claimed that his rapping ability surpasses that of veterans Olamide, Phyno and MI combined.
“I am a better rapper than Blaqbonez, Phyno, Olamide and MI combined,” he said.
While making the claim, CDQ also acknowledged Blaqbonez as one of the stronger rappers in the Nigerian music scene, saying his colleague is better than most rappers in the country.
The “Nowo Soke” hitmaker argued that popularity and commercial success should not be the primary measures of a rapper’s ability.
According to him, lyrical substance and depth are more important when assessing the quality of a rapper.
CDQ maintained that he possesses greater lyrical depth and quality than most of his colleagues.
His remarks have since generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users criticising what they described as a lack of respect for established figures in Nigerian hip-hop.
The comments have particularly drawn attention because of the status and influence of Olamide, Phyno and MI within the Nigerian rap scene.
CDQ has yet to publicly clarify or withdraw his statement.
