Former Real Madrid captain Nacho Fernandez says he would have no problem voting for a Barcelona player for the Ballon d’Or if the choice was justified.
However, the former Spain international has picked Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe as his preferred winner of this year’s award.
The 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for next month, with top players from around the world competing for the prestigious honour.
Speaking to El Larguero, Nacho said he would welcome a Spanish or Real Madrid player winning the prize, while highlighting Mbappe as his choice.
He said, via Cadena SER: “I see it clearly. For me, if it’s a Real Madrid player or a member of the Spanish national team, I’ll be happy.
“I don’t care if it’s a Barcelona player, because I’ve played with them and won titles with them. If I had to vote? If I had to vote, I’d choose Mbappe. As a defender, I see that every year he gets faster and scores more goals; he’s a physical beast.”
Nacho came through Real Madrid’s academy and went on to captain the club before leaving in 2024 for Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah.
