Nigeria Davis Cup team depart for crucial Morocco tie

Nigeria’s Davis Cup team has travelled to Rabat for its World Group II clash with Morocco, scheduled for September 19 and 20.

The National Sports Commission said the squad departed Lagos aboard Royal Air Maroc after a three-week training camp.

The tie will be played at the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc, with the winner securing promotion to World Group I.

Nigeria will be seeking to end a four-match losing streak against Morocco, with Head Coach Benson Ishicheli leading Daniel Adeleye, Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel and Yusuf Abubakar.

Teenage prospect Oluwaseun Ogunsakin is expected to join the squad in Morocco after featuring at the French Open junior event and US Open this year.

Nigeria reached World Group II after defeating Uzbekistan in February, its first qualification for the stage in 30 years.

Victory in Rabat would earn Nigeria promotion to World Group I and mark a significant step forward in the country’s Davis Cup campaign.
