Ghana Launches ‘Marrify App’ To Help Couples Verify Partners’ Marital Status
Ghana has launched ‘Marrify’, a digital application designed to help prospective couples verify their partners’ marital status before getting married.
The app was launched in Accra on August 28 in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and MarryRight, an agency specialising in family law and marriage.
Marrify allows users to check whether a prospective partner is already legally married by accessing verified information from marriage registries, courts, local assemblies and the Ghana Gazette.
The platform also enables users to verify whether churches, pastors, imams and wedding venues are officially licensed to conduct marriages in Ghana.
Speaking at the launch, Ghana’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said the initiative would promote transparency and help couples make more informed decisions before entering marriage.
She said marriage carries social, cultural and economic consequences that extend beyond couples to their children, families and communities.
Lartey said Marrify would encourage relationships built on trust and respect while helping to prevent gender-based violence and the emotional, financial and legal problems that may arise when a partner’s marital history is concealed.
Officials behind the platform said its goal is to help people identify hidden marital status and avoid potential cases of fraud or bigamy before a marriage takes place.
The app also provides an additional layer of protection by allowing prospective couples to confirm that the individuals and venues involved in their wedding are legally authorised to conduct marriages.
Marrify currently operates within Ghana’s legal and marriage registration system and is aimed at improving transparency and public confidence in the administration of marriages.
