Fury confirms Anthony Joshua showdown will take place at Madison Square Garden

Tyson Fury has confirmed that his highly anticipated heavyweight clash with British-Nigerian Anthony Joshua will be staged at Madison Square Garden in New York, ending months of speculation over the venue.

The former world champion revealed the development on Instagram by sharing a poster featuring himself and Joshua against the New York skyline, although he did not provide a date.

“What a place NYC, and what a venue MSG, and what a fight Fury vs AJ, the land of opportunity,” Fury wrote.

“What a weekend away for the lads on the piss in NYC. Iconic! Not long now guys.”

Joshua and his promoter, Matchroom Boxing, had yet to publicly confirm the venue at the time of the announcement.

The bout is expected to take place in November, with November 20 reportedly being considered as the target date after both fighters agreed contracts with Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.

Joshua’s initial agreement required the fight to be staged in the United Kingdom, but organisers Netflix and Alalshikh favoured a US venue. This prompted promoter Eddie Hearn to reopen negotiations over moving the contest to America.

Hearn had previously said Joshua’s camp preferred a UK fight but was willing to consider an alternative that satisfied all parties.

“We don’t want to do the fight in the US, but we also understand it has to work for everybody,” Hearn said.

“We’ve set out our position, mainly in concern to the tax situation that will deplete his net purse by going to America, which can be rectified and I think they’re happy to do that”.

“We will need to make a decision this week. They’ve replied, they have our terms. It’s up to them,” Hearn said.

The choice of New York has frustrated some fans, who questioned why the all-British heavyweight encounter would not be staged at a major UK venue such as Wembley Stadium.

Fury, 38, has recorded 36 professional victories, with his only losses coming against Oleksandr Usyk in consecutive bouts in 2024. He returned to action in July, stopping Poland’s Mariusz Wach in Pattaya, Thailand, after briefly retiring following his second defeat by Usyk.

Joshua also secured victory in a July 25 tune-up against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, which Hearn said helped create momentum for negotiations between the two camps.
