Igboho Proposes Joint Federal, State Oversight Of Iru Ekun Operatives

Yoruba nation activist Sunday Igboho has unveiled a proposed structure for the Iru Ekun Security Network following its inauguration in Ogun State.

The initiative, which reportedly attracted more than 15,000 volunteers, is expected to support efforts to tackle kidnapping, banditry and other forms of insecurity across the South-West. Under the proposed arrangement, the Federal Government would determine the agency responsible for training operatives, while state governments would oversee their deployment.

Igboho said the network would complement, rather than replace, existing security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and Nigerian Army. He directed members to work closely with security agencies and report security breaches to the appropriate authorities.

The activist said operatives who notice security threats in their areas should liaise with the relevant Divisional Police Officer for necessary action. He added that trained operatives would be issued identification cards at the local government level, while arrangements would be made to provide operational support, including mobility and monthly allowances.

Igboho also said a commander would be appointed when the training programme begins, stressing that members would be expected to operate within clearly defined responsibilities. He warned the volunteers against abusing their positions, interfering in civil matters or using their authority to settle personal disputes.

Igboho urged the members to maintain discipline and responsible conduct, saying their behaviour would determine the credibility of the security network. He also compared the initiative with early community-based civil defence efforts, arguing that properly organised community security structures could develop into formally recognised national institutions.

The activist said cooperation with established security agencies would be critical to ensuring that Iru Ekun contributes meaningfully to efforts to improve security across the South-West.
