Fresh details have emerged from the nomination documents released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 presidential election, with President Bola Tinubu listing only his university qualification in the educational section of his EC9 form.
The documents show that the President declared a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, obtained in 1979, while the sections designated for primary and secondary school qualifications on the summary page of the form were left blank.
Copies of his university degree certificate and National Youth Service Corps certificate were, however, attached to the submission.
Tinubu also declared that he was born on March 29, 1952, in Lagos and identified his occupation as a politician. His employment history shows he worked at Mobil Nigeria Limited from 1983 to 1992, served as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, and has been President since 2023. He also stated that he has never been dismissed from public service.
The documents published by INEC also contain the nomination papers of other presidential candidates. Labour Party candidate Peter Obi submitted his educational record from primary school through university, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar listed his academic qualifications and previous employment history.
The publication of the documents marks the beginning of the statutory period for public scrutiny, during which any person may challenge information contained in a candidate’s declaration in court if supported by evidence.
Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January 16.
