‘Odogwu of Asaba’ Arrested Over Alleged Rape Case After Death of 20-Year-Old Woman

Delta police begin investigation as social media personality faces allegations linked to victim’s reported suicide….

The Delta State Police Command has arrested popular social media personality Ifeanyi Ogbonna, better known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over allegations of rape involving a 20-year-old woman who later died after reportedly taking a poisonous substance.

The case has sparked public outrage, with Nigerians on social media demanding justice and calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death.

According to a statement by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Command received a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after she was invited by Ogbonna for a content creation training programme advertised on his social media pages.

Police alleged that after arriving in Asaba, the woman was taken to a hotel by the suspect, where she was reportedly assaulted.

The victim was said to have returned home afterwards and informed her parents about the incident, reportedly expressing deep emotional distress.

Before her death, police said the woman recorded a video in which she narrated her alleged experience and spoke about the trauma she suffered following the incident.

The Command stated that she later ingested a toxic substance and was taken to a medical facility for treatment but died despite efforts to save her life.

Following the petition, Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the Area Command in Effurun to commence an immediate investigation.

Police operatives subsequently arrested Ogbonna, who is currently being questioned as part of the ongoing probe.

The Command said the suspect has provided statements that may assist investigators, while detectives continue to gather evidence and establish the facts surrounding the case.

CP Oyeniyi assured the deceased’s family and members of the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally, adding that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the outcome.

“The Command remains committed to ensuring justice and appropriate legal action in accordance with the law,” the police commissioner said.

The police said the investigation is ongoing.
