Juju Music Veteran Y.K Ajao Dies, Tributes Pour In

Popular Nigerian juju musician, Yekini Kolawole Ajao, widely known as Y.K Ajao, has passed away.

News of his death was shared on Friday night through an Instagram post by fellow musician Shina Peters, who paid an emotional tribute to the late artiste.

In the message, Peters described Ajao as more than a colleague, calling him a brother whose impact would not be forgotten. He praised the late musician’s sound, spirit, and presence, noting that his legacy would continue to live on through his music.

Y.K Ajao built a name for himself in Nigeria’s music scene decades ago. He turned professional in 1973 when he established his band, Y.K. Ajao & His Professional Brothers Band.

While rooted in traditional juju music, Ajao distinguished himself by developing a unique variation known as “Juju Makossa,” blending elements that set his sound apart from his contemporaries.

As news of his passing spreads, fans and colleagues continue to reflect on his contributions to the evolution of juju music in Nigeria.
