Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has pointed to a lack of clinical luck as the deciding factor in his team’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg setback against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. Despite the home advantage at Camp Nou, the Blaugrana find themselves trailing in the tie after Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sørloth both found the net for Diego Simeone’s disciplined side, handing the visitors a significant edge ahead of the return fixture.
During his post-match media briefing, the German tactician analyzed the turning points of the contest, specifically highlighting defensive lapses and the impact of a pivotal dismissal. Flick noted that the red card not only reduced his squad’s numbers but also directly resulted in a goal from the ensuing set-piece, a sequence of events he believes his players could have managed with greater composure.
Despite the disadvantage, Flick praised the resilience of his squad, noting their continued performance levels even while playing with ten men. However, he remained steadfast in his belief that the final result was largely dictated by circumstances beyond tactical preparation.
“On the first goal, we needed to defend much better, and the red card led to a free-kick goal. We could’ve done better,” Flick remarked. “We played well in the first and second half, even with a player less. We gave everything, but today luck was not on our side. It’s not over yet.”
Looking ahead to the second leg, the Barcelona manager refused to concede defeat in the pursuit of a final-four berth. While acknowledging the difficult path now facing the Catalan giants, he emphasized a commitment to physical and tactical persistence to overturn the scoreline.
“We’ll try, we’ll fight. The semi-final might seem far away now, but we’ll try to be there,” he concluded, signaling a defiant stance as the club prepares for the high-stakes rematch in Madrid.
