The Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) has warned residents not to panic following a recent rise in upper respiratory infections across the state.
In a statement signed by Director-General, Muhammad Abbas, the agency clarified that, despite the increase in symptoms such as cough, sore throat, mild fever, and nasal congestion, there are currently no confirmed cases of any COVID-19 variant in Kano.
“Many respiratory illnesses are seasonal and self-limiting. While we are monitoring the situation closely, residents should remain calm and follow standard preventive measures”, Prof. Abbas said.
The centre emphasized that most upper respiratory infections resolve within a week to 10 days without serious complications. Severe cases may include difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, or chest pain, and those experiencing such symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
Children under five, people over 60, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and HIV were identified as particularly vulnerable.
Residents are advised to practice good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, wearing masks in crowded spaces, maintaining well-ventilated homes, and keeping vaccinations up to date.
The KNCDC assured the public that isolation and treatment facilities are ready, and diagnostic services are available statewide to manage any potential outbreaks promptly.
