Fubara Dissolves Rivers State Executive Council Amid Political Tensions

In a sweeping shake-up, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has disbanded the Rivers State Executive Council, ordering all top aides to vacate their offices as political tensions continue to mount in the state. The directive, issued Thursday through his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, instructs commissioners and special advisers to hand over responsibilities to permanent secretaries or the most senior officers in their ministries.

Fubara thanked members of the outgoing cabinet for their service and wished them success in future endeavors.

The move follows recent reconciliation efforts disclosed by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, aimed at easing the prolonged political turbulence in Rivers State.

Wike revealed that President Bola Tinubu convened a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa on February 9, bringing together Governor Fubara, his predecessor, and other key stakeholders to address the ongoing power struggle.

Speaking in Abuja after inspecting ongoing projects, Wike expressed optimism that the mediation would bring the dispute to a close. He urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to support the President’s appeal and expressed confidence that Governor Fubara would uphold any agreements reached.

The development comes amid the filing of a third impeachment notice against Governor Fubara by lawmakers aligned with Wike, a process currently entangled in legal proceedings.
