CAF Initiates Disciplinary Probe Following Turbulence in AFCON 2025 Quarter-Finals

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched a formal investigation into reports of significant misconduct during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final matches held over the weekend. The continental governing body is specifically scrutinizing the high-stakes encounters between host nation Morocco and Cameroon, as well as the intense battle between Nigeria and Algeria.

This disciplinary move follows a series of documented altercations involving national team players, coaching staff, and match officials, which reportedly escalated into disruptions within the stadium tunnels and post-match media zones.

Official match reports and high-definition video evidence currently sit before the CAF Disciplinary Board for a comprehensive evaluation of potentially “unacceptable behavior.” A statement released on Monday via the organization’s official digital platform confirmed that the governing body intends to hold any identified individuals accountable for actions that contravene the tournament’s code of conduct. Beyond the field of play, CAF is also examining specific footage from the mixed zone area, where certain members of the press allegedly engaged in unprofessional behavior during player interviews.

CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing. CAF is also reviewing footage of an incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area,” the statement read.

The investigation follows a particularly volatile conclusion to the Nigeria-Algeria fixture in Marrakesh, where the Super Eagles earned a 2-0 victory to secure their semi-final berth. While goals from star striker Victor Osimhen and forward Akor Adams provided a sporting highlight for the Nigerian side, the final whistle triggered a wave of aggression from the Algerian contingent. Disgruntled players and officials reportedly surrounded the refereeing team to protest specific calls, leading to physical scuffles that required the intervention of stadium security to protect the match officials.

Furthermore, security personnel at the Marrakesh Stadium successfully prevented a major security breach when a segment of the crowd attempted to invade the pitch following the match. These scenes of chaos stood in stark contrast to the tactical discipline shown by the Super Eagles throughout the ninety minutes. As CAF prepares its final report, the findings could lead to significant fines or suspensions for the involved parties, potentially impacting the availability of personnel as the competition transitions into the semi-final stage.
