Nigeria kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes alive with a 2–1 victory over Lesotho in Maseru on Friday evening.
The Super Eagles, who began the day in third place with 11 points, needed all three points to stay in contention — and they delivered under pressure.
After a goalless first half, captain William Troost-Ekong opened the scoring from the penalty spot early in the second half. Debutant Akor Adams then doubled Nigeria’s advantage with a smart finish, before Kalake pulled one back for Lesotho.
In the group’s other fixtures, Benin Republic edged Rwanda 1–0 to retain top spot, while South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe despite a strong performance.
Nigeria will now face Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday, knowing that another win could see them reclaim a qualification spot in Group C.
