Two Jailed in Kano for Impersonating EFCC Operatives with Fake ID Cards

Convicted fraudsters posed as anti-corruption agents to scam unsuspecting citizens; sentenced to six months or N50,000 fine

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of two individuals, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Usman, for impersonating officials of the anti-graft agency using forged identity cards.

Justice Nasiru Saminu of the Kano State High Court delivered the verdict on Friday, sentencing the duo to six months imprisonment with the option of a ₦50,000 fine each.

The convicts were arraigned by the Kano Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on a one-count charge bordering on impersonation. According to court documents, Abdullahi and Usman posed as EFCC investigators in May 2025, using fake identification to convince their targets in Kano of their bogus authority.

The charge stated that the pair, “within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, falsely impersonated to be investigators of the EFCC, using a false identity card,” an offence punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law.

Upon arraignment, both men pleaded guilty to the charge.

Prosecution counsel, Idris I. Haruna, presented the facts of the case and urged the court to convict them accordingly. Justice Saminu did so without delay.

The EFCC confirmed that the men were arrested during an undercover operation and subsequently charged to court.

The anti-corruption agency continues to warn the public against falling victim to individuals posing as operatives, encouraging citizens to verify identities and report suspicious behavior.
