Yusuf Buhari Thanks President Tinubu for Honouring Late Father with State Funeral

Son of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, Yusuf Buhari, has publicly expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the state burial accorded to his father, describing it as a mark of respect far beyond political affiliation.

Yusuf spoke on Thursday during a special expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held in Abuja to honour the late Nigerian leader, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.

Accompanied by his siblings, Yusuf conveyed the family’s gratitude to President Tinubu and his administration for the dignified farewell and support extended to the Buhari family during their time of mourning.

“Your actions have shown that he was seen as more than just a politician. He was respected as a friend and a father,” Yusuf said, visibly emotional. “To all members of the Federal Executive Council, for the care and befitting burial accorded to our late father, we appreciate you all.”

He went on to thank the leadership of the National Assembly, including the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, fellow governors, and the Nigerian public for their support and solidarity.

“Your visits, calls, and prayers symbolise a great honour to the memory of our late father,” he said. “We are sincerely grateful for all the support and solidarity extended to the family. May Allah continue to bless us all.”

Overcome with emotion during the tribute, Yusuf repeated softly: “Thank you, Daddy. Thank you, Daddy. Thank you, Daddy. May Allah continue to bless, provide, and protect you throughout your tenure,” directing his final words to President Tinubu.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s president for two terms from 2015 to 2023, and earlier as military head of state from 1983 to 1985. Following his death at a clinic in London, his remains were flown back to Nigeria, where he was laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, in Daura, his hometown in Katsina State. The burial was attended by President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and several dignitaries.
