The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has commenced a nationwide step-down training on its revised data collection framework, aimed at supporting the implementation of Nigeria’s National Action Plan on Human Trafficking (2022–2026).
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop held on Tuesday in Enugu, NAPTIP Director-General, Mrs. Binta Bello, described the training as a vital step in strengthening data-driven responses to human trafficking. Represented by the South East Zonal Commander, Mr. Jonathan Ukpai, Bello noted that the workshop is part of a broader initiative titled “From Policy to Action: Implementation of the National Action Plan on Human Trafficking in Nigeria.”
She highlighted that in 2024, NAPTIP conducted a thorough internal review of its data collection tools, resulting in key enhancements such as the inclusion of disability indicators, to ensure more inclusive, accurate, and representative reporting.
Also speaking at the event, Enugu State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, commended NAPTIP for its continuous efforts to eradicate human trafficking. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting the agency’s mission, promising to provide necessary assistance to ease its operations.
In a separate address, NAPTIP’s Director of Research and Programme Development, Mr. Josiah Emerole represented by Deputy Director Mr. Rasheed Olatunji underscored the crucial role of reliable data in fighting human trafficking. He emphasized that the training aligns with the federal government’s focus on evidence-based performance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Emerole noted that participants were being trained on the updated data collection instruments designed to enhance evidence-based programming and improve coordination between national and sub-national actors.
Delivering a goodwill message, the Country Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Mr. Cheikh Toure, lauded the dedication of frontline stakeholders in Nigeria’s anti-trafficking fight. He announced that a significant milestone the launch of the National Action Plan Reporting Dashboard would take place on July 30 to commemorate the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
Toure added that the updated reporting tools demonstrate a strong focus on gender sensitivity and disability inclusion. He also praised the Enugu State government for its support of the NAPTIP State Task Force, highlighting the essential role of strong state-level partnerships in sustaining Nigeria’s counter-trafficking efforts.
