Support for the creation of Anioma State continues to gain momentum, with 79 senators of the 10th National Assembly endorsing the proposal. The senators formally backed the initiative by signing in support of the constitutional amendment bill seeking the new state’s creation.
In a parallel show of support, traditional rulers from the South-East region have also declared their backing for the proposed state, further strengthening what is shaping up to be a national consensus on the matter.
According to reports, the signatures were secured following a personalized letter addressed to each lawmaker by Sen. Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District and is leading the advocacy for Anioma State.
The letter, dated May 27, 2025, was addressed to the Senate President and individual senators, urging their endorsement of Senate Bill 481, which proposes the creation of Anioma State as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
In the letter titled “Anioma as Equity State,” Senator Nwoko framed the issue as one of justice, equity, and national cohesion, not merely a redrawing of boundaries. He argued that the South-East remains underrepresented with only five states, compared to six or seven in other geopolitical zones.
“Anioma State, to be carved out of Delta State, presents a just and logical solution to this imbalance,” Nwoko wrote. He described Anioma as a region with strong cultural and historical ties to the South-East, adding that its creation would promote federal balance and strengthen national unity. Echoing Nwoko’s position, the Ndigbo Progressive Traditional Rulers Forum formally declared their support through a letter dated May 15, 2025.
Signed by HRM Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu (Oroko Abia), Diawa I of Umudiawu Ancient Kingdom and Chairman of the Forum, alongside HRM Igwe Sunny Orah, the Forum’s Secretary, the letter praised Senator Nwoko’s leadership and pledged the Forum’s full commitment to the cause.
